Apocalypse Wins 2009 World Cup in Palm Desert, CA Apocalypse flew to San Diego and drove to Palm Desert CA right next to Palm Springs. The team stayed in the luxurious Desert Springs Marriott Resort arriving on Wednesday, April 29. All Apocalypse players played on Team USA against Canada, Team Cayman and Team Mexico whose line averaged 500 pounds. The preliminary round was played on Thursday in round robin format to seed the finals on Friday. Team USA featured four players from Kansas City, and six players from California. The rest were all Apocalypse players who increased the overall speed of the team by a giant margin. Pat Connolly and Brian Baer took turns quarterbacking Team USA to a 3 -0 start in the preliminary round. The International tourney is 9-man blocking on a full-size field. The fields were one mile from the hotel and were in pristine condition. Team USA was seeded number one on Friday and started off by defeating Canada handily. Mexico defeated Team Cayman setting up a showdown between the 2007 World Cup Champs, Mexico and the 2008 World Cup Champs, Team USA. With the help of three Apocalypse TDs I the first half, Team USA roared out to a 28-0 lead and the first half ended with Team USA up 28-6. Team USA went on to win in dominating fashion. Bernard Summerall of Apocalypse was named Team USA’s MVP. Other outstanding performances included Quinton McLendon who was featured in a local newspaper article (see below). Derrick “Hollywood” Brown, Reggie Haugabook, Rashawn Lamar and Brian Baer also put in outstanding performances. This was Craig Miller’s second World Cup win in a row as coach of Team USA. Craig said, “The Apocalypse players made the difference, not me! Every time I have coached Team USA without my Apocalypse players, Team USA has lost! Last year Team USA was 0-4 until Apocalypse showed up and won the Cup back from Mexico!” On Saturday, Apocalypse suited up for a double-elimination tournament for the 7-man World Cup Championship easily defeating all teams for their second World Cup Championship in a row, having won in 2008 in Costa Rica.
